Small Business Charter Workshop - Running a Business Incubator and Accelerator Space

University incubators are proven to be a great way to transfer knowledge between Higher Education Institutions and small firms. They are effective at connecting student entrepreneurs with experienced businesses, who may provide mentoring or advice for students wanting to start or grow their business. Incubators are also helping aspiring entrepreneurs by facilitating connections, providing knowledge transfer and helping to shape innovative ideas into reality.

The workshop will explore how synergies can be created between research, teaching and public engagement to support businesses, including charities and social enterprises, and to inspire students to engage with them.

During the workshop incubator models at some of the SBC schools will be looked at along with the selection processes they have developed to create a pipeline of student entrepreneurs. The session will discuss the challenges in linking the incubator facility to academic programmes and especially to entrepreneurship students. It will also suggest possible solutions to overcome such challenges.

Speakers will discuss the importance of collaboration between university stakeholders, local authorities and businesses to create graduate employment in the local region, and the role of the incubator space in achieving this. Leeds Business School and Wakefield Council will be sharing a case study of their collaboration on one such project.

The event will provide delegates with a platform to share examples, discuss case studies and network with peers.

Participants will gain an insight into:
- Different incubator models for supporting student entrepreneurs and small firms
- Collaboration between university stakeholders, local authorities and small firms to generate graduate employment.
- Engaging with charities and social enterprises to support their growth.
- The role of business schools in building connections with local businesses.
